Azimuth is a 2.1 Epic-rated Hard 4* level created and published by Knots on October 27, 2021. Created in the modern art style, Azimuth features a wide variety of backgrounds depicting various mystical locations. It is somewhat compass and navigation themed, fitting the name of the level. The level has been praised for its high-quality art and smooth transitions. This level is the first level of the Portal Gauntlet, before Shards of Siberia.

Gameplay[]

  • 0-6%: The level begins with a slow and simple ball part. This section is aesthetically themed around vintage television screens, with the text "STAND BY..." in the middle.
  • 6-12%: After a somewhat glitchy transition, the player enters a cube part. The ground is completely flat, with a rotating square supposedly laying out the track, slowly rolling ahead of the player. The background is celestial-themed, with abstract darkness and a large floating crystal with a ring around it.
  • 13-37%: This section is a long cube part where the player rides moving platforms and jumps over spikes. The backgrounds of the section depict several connecting locations, such as a pool in what looks like a temple, a large open space with abstract objects like the ones in Monument Valley, and a large open forest with lanterns. A pink flamingo tube floats through each location as the player progresses.
  • 38-44%: The player becomes a ship as the background becomes space-themed, with planets, stars, and spaceships. They must travel under a large structure and hold down to get through a hole that opens at the top. When the player approaches a block with a compass, they must go over or under it, representing the "north or south" direction when calculating an azimuth. The walls then close as the player is told to hold down on a dash orb.
  • 45-61%: As the player holds down on the dash orb (without stopping), a long animation plays, featuring many effects and art. First, a whale appears, floating in the air with fish around it, before the scene cuts to a compass. After some camera panning, a star with compass directions appears, which spins to reveal some art. As the song says the words "mind game", a wing-shaped animation occurs before becoming a butterfly and flying around some blue and white objects. After a wavy animation, the gameplay resumes.
  • 62-69%: The player arrives in another slow cube part with slanted platforms and some moving elevators. A compass spins around in the background. As the player goes into a corridor at the end, they slow down to a halt and disappear.
  • 69-82%: When the player is not visible, the camera slowly pans upward, revealing several floating objects while the song lyrics appear on a line. A sign displaying the words "GET OVER AGAIN" moves downward as the same lyrics are sung in the song.
  • 83-100%: As the camera finishes panning upward, an upside-down floating pyramid (similar to the one from Super Mario Odyssey) appears in the background along with fireflies. The player then re-appears in a cube part and must hit yellow orbs and jump on top of swaying platforms. The level abruptly ends soon afterward.

User coins[]

Azimuth contains one user coin.

To get it, the player must jump at 9% to grab a custom key. The coin will then appear at the end of the level and will be collected automatically. Throughout the level, however, the level fakes the player out with unobtainable user coins (except for one). These "fake" coins appear at 40%, 63%, and 89%. The coin can be collected at 40%, although the player must get through an extremely tight Extreme Demon-difficulty mini-ship part.

  • The level is 2m 41s in length.
  • The level was nominated for and achieved Best Modern Level in the 2021 The Geometry Dash Awards.
  • In navigation, the azimuth is the angular distance of an angle formed between a reference direction (north or south) and a line from the observer to a celestial object. Compass bearings are azimuth measurements.
  • In the first preview of the level on Knots' YouTube channel, the text "rectangle" is across the crystal in the background in the second section. This instance might have hinted at Knots' next level of the same name.[1]
    • This text was removed in the final version of the level.
  • At 27%, a tribute to Michigun's temple levels can be seen in the background.
  • The description is a reference to one of Knots' original characters, a star named Jimothy. According to Knots, he is "a 12,839,956 year old star (still really young for a star + he’s an immature idiot)".[2]
  • Knots revealed that the name of the inflatable flamingo is "Bird of Passage"[3] and they have "a history of tax fraud".[1]
  • Some text containing numbers appears throughout the level with no known meaning.
    • The first section displays the text "LISTEN 0000399".
    • The directions "110.7038°S" and "7 6079°E" are displayed during the first long animation.
    • Then, the number "2.718281828" appears with the text "RANGE OF DISPARITY" when the compass appears.
  • For April Fools' Day 2022, Knots added a smiley face to the inverted pyramid and messed up the end screen's text.
