Bloodbath is a 1.9/2.0/2.1 Extreme Demon mega-collaboration level hosted, verified and published by Riot on 12 August 2015.[1] Following its verification, it was initially placed at #1 on the Official Extreme and Insane Demon Records List (nowadays known as the Demonlist). Barely any other level would challenge this position for over a year until Sakupen Hell was released, marking the beginning of Bloodbath's descent in perceived difficulty. It is the second instalment of the community-designated 'Apocalyptic Trilogy' of similarly-themed Extreme Demon levels, succeeding Cataclysm and preceding aftermath. A buffed and extended remake, Bloodlust, was verified by knobbelboy and released in 2.1.
One of the game's most popular and recognisable levels, Bloodbath is the most downloaded and liked level not featured in a gauntlet, map pack, or Geometry Dash World. In the Geometry Dash 10-Year Anniversary presentation, the level was voted the second most favourite level of players, behind Change of Scene.[2]
History[]
Origin and creation[]
Before Bloodbath, Riot was involved in the creation of Silent Akbar (currently known as Tartarus) along with Cyclic and Aurorus, which was intended to surpass the difficulty of ICE Carbon Diablo X but was abandoned due to its impossible difficulty. Subsequently, Riot decided to host another project.
On 2 June 2015, Riot uploaded the first preview of a new level titled 'Bloodbath', featuring difficult ship parts.[3] A week later, Riot posted the second preview of Bloodbath, featuring Havok, Giron and Ggb0y's parts. Afterwards, Michigun uploaded a preview of his part in the level.[4] On 6 July 2015, Riot uploaded a trailer video of Bloodbath featuring all the creators involved in the project.[5]
Verification process[]
Riot began making progress in attempting to verify Bloodbath, achieving 48% on 26 June 2015.[6] He then reached 58% on 13 July, 65% on 3 August and then 90% on 6 August.[6] Riot then crashed at 94%, during Ggb0y's part, on 8 August 2015, becoming his worst fail in the level.[7] On 12 August 2015, Riot verified Bloodbath after 25,000+ attempts and numerous practice attempts on stream.[8] The level would immediately be placed at #1 on the Geometry Dash forums Demonlist after its verification.
The race to beat Bloodbath[]
Since Bloodbath's verification and placement as the new hardest Demon, numerous skilled players have attempted to beat the level. Smokes and Sandstorm made the first progress; Smokes reached 25% a few days after the level was released,[9] and then 27% and 34%.[10][11] Afterwards, Smokes would temporarily pause his progress; at the same time, Sandstorm began practising the level, making progress on the first half and then on the second half before dropping the level.[12]
Mabby01, a skilled player at that time, made significant progress on Bloodbath, reaching 61% on 16 January 2016 before beating Cataclysm a day later.[13] She would get 66% on 5 February and 71% on 14 February.[14][15] Like the other two, Mabby also dropped the level.
The most notable race was between two skilled players: Surv and Quasar. On 8 February 2016, Quasar made his first progress video, accomplishing 42-79%.[16] A week later, on 16 February 2016, he made further progress, completing the second half of the level.[17] Quasar made his first substantial progress on the level, reaching 39% ten days later and halfway through the level a day after.[18][19] Quasar would immediately catch a flu after his 61% progress, thus taking a break from his progress.[12][20]
Surv started making progress on Bloodbath after beating Cataclysm. He would eventually crash at 96% on 6 March 2016, making it his worst fail in the game and the closest progress in beating the level at the time.[12] After recovering, Quasar started to make more progress, reaching 77% on 9 March 2016.[21] Finally, on 14 March 2016, seven months after the level's release, Quasar became the first victor of Bloodbath after a fail at 90% and over 28,000+ attempts.[22]
Legacy[]
Bloodbath remains one of the most popular Extreme Demon levels in Geometry Dash, if not the most popular. It is currently the most downloaded and liked Extreme Demon in-game. The level remained unbeaten for seven months until Quasar beat it on 14 March 2016.[23]
The verification of Bloodbath and its subsequent lengthy tenure as the hardest level contributed to the established community standard to scrutinise the verification of difficult levels. While two other levels, Theory of Darkness and unnerfed Phobos, managed to dethrone Bloodbath temporarily, both levels were ultimately unrated due to their hacked verifications.[24]
Bloodbath was also the first Top 1 Demon level to remain in the top spot for over a year, officially dethroned by Sakupen Hell on 14 August 2016.[25] With the placement of SINGULARITY on the Demonlist, Bloodbath fell out of the Top 50 hardest Demons. It had remained in the Top 50 for nearly 40 months, longer than any other Extreme Demon besides Sonic Wave at the time. The record is now being held by Zodiac, which remained in the Top 50 for over five years until Terminal Rampancy's movement from #52 to #44 on 30 June 2024.
The level's success led to a remake; Manix648 and several other creators created a redecorated extended version named Bloodlust, which Quasar was initially set to verify. The verification was ultimately handed to knobbelboy due to the former's disappearance. knobbelboy verified Bloodlust after a 97% and 98% fail and 121,296 attempts. Like Bloodbath, the level was also placed #1 on the Demonlist. It remained at that spot for over a year until Zodiac dethroned it.
Description[]
Bloodbath is depicted by its red and black 'hell' theme and features extreme speed changes, tight spaces and precise timing, with relentless series of complex gameplay sequences.
- weoweoteo's part from 0% to 10% begins with a ship sequence continuing from Cataclysm, transitioning into a red-and-black colour scheme with a face resembling his icon above. The sequence progresses through a half-speed portal, a double-speed cube and a triple-speed ship with flashing colours, gravity changes and a tight 1.5-block flying space, followed by a triple-speed mini-ball synced to the beat.
- Vermillion's part from 10% to 25% features a triple-speed ship sequence with frequent gravity changes, ending with a ramp leading to his signature. A half-speed ball sequence follows, requiring precise jumps synced to the song's notes, with platforms featuring red bricks, black blocks and extra spikes. A mirrored sequence flips the screen mid-gameplay, leading into a crescendo of gravity portals.
- Michigun's part from 25% to 33% slows the pace and shifts to a grey colour scheme, featuring a normal-speed cube sequence with triple spikes, gravity changes and a background of flickering torches, chains and thorns. A one-block-wide ship sequence, a narrow ball sequence with alternating gravity, a tight UFO sequence and another triple-spike cube sequence leads into a concluding narrow wave sequence with flashing red 'MICHIGUN' text.
- Evasium's part from 33% to 42% begins with a brief dual-cube sequence before transitioning into a half-speed ship sequence with wave-like movements through spiked obstacles. The ship turns mini midway as the background flashes to reveal additional details, leading into a mini-wave sequence where the correct path becomes visible through background flashes. A normal wave sequence with tight spaces follows, leading into a fast-paced UFO sequence with rapid gravity changes, pink orbs and a mini-UFO spam sequence that builds momentum as the music accelerates.
- Crack's part from 42% to 54% shifts the key to D minor and transitions into a blood-red background, beginning with a chaotic triple-speed mini-ship sequence requiring extreme precision. A brief normal-speed sequence introduces a gravity change before returning to triple-speed straight-flying through Clubstep-like monsters with narrow flight paths. A half-speed cube sequence with difficult timings provides a short break before accelerating into another high-speed sequence, ending with 'Crack' text appearing before the transition.
- ASonicMen's part from 54% to 71% features a triple-speed mini-UFO sequence with tight manoeuvres through small gaps, rapid size and gravity changes, and a background of flashing clouds and pulsing circles. A brief half-speed moment interrupts the intensity before resuming triple speed, leading into a memory-based mini-ball sequence, a rapid spam sequence with nine blue orbs reminiscent of Silent clubstep, and an auto cube sequence where 'ASONIC' appears before another brief speed change.
- Etzer's part from 71% to 80% features a triple-speed normal-sized UFO sequence with a more artistic, glow-heavy style, leading to a landing on his name that triggers gravity portals and orbs. A normal-speed ship sequence follows, requiring navigation through a deceptive gravity portal and a two-block-wide path before a brief triple-speed UFO sequence transitions into an awkward low-flying ship sequence inside a darkened tunnel, known for a meme about failing at 79%.
- Havok's part from 80% to 88% begins with a ball sequence similar to Vermillion's part, featuring orbs placed inside and outside blocks, along with tricky timing and invisible platforms. A mini-portal and half-speed transition increases the difficulty before the gameplay speeds up again, leading into a triple-speed sequence where 'HAVOK' appears in the background. A fast-paced UFO sequence with rapid gravity changes and sawblade obstacles follows, with arrows guiding the correct path. The part concludes with a half-speed wave sequence that requires precise straight-wave control through a narrow path, similar to the final wave of Acropolis.
- Giron's part from 88% to 93% begins with his signature 'G' appearing before a demanding triple-speed upside-down ship sequence with orbs dictating movement and tight 1.5-block flying spaces. A long normal-sized straight-fly tests consistency before transitioning into a half-speed dual-cube sequence requiring precise jumps and orb activations, concluding with a brief non-dual auto sequence leading into the final stretch.
- Ggb0y's part from 93% to 98% features a half-speed ball sequence similar to Cataclysm, with red block platforms, chains and the words 'your blood' fading into view. A precisely timed blue orb leads into a brief UFO sequence, followed by a short upside-down straight-fly that poses a high risk of late-game failure. The final ball sequence contains numerous fake blocks, with 'GBOY' appearing at the top of the screen as the part concludes.
- Riot's part from 98% to 100% features a normal-speed semi-auto cube sequence that ends the level, displaying 'GG' above the cube and 'RIOT' below. A final set of triple spikes must be cleared to avoid a heartbreaking fail at 98% or 99%, while an alternate route allows for a precise jump at the end of Ggb0y's part, revealing Michigun's name as an Easter egg. The level concludes with a floating heart decoration above the final jump.
Errors[]
- There is an error in the level at Etzer's ship sequence with a missing block.

Wins[]
- TrusTa was once the person with the least attempts in Bloodbath, at about 13,000 attempts. However, BlassCFB beat it in around 8,000, and even before that, took 12,000, beating TrusTa's record. Later, Gizbro held the attempt record with 4,236 attempts. The current record is 571 attempts by SeptaGon7.
- Dual KiKi beat Bloodbath three times in one day, at the end of the day, calling it a 'Medium Demon'. Then, two days later, he beat it again, jokingly calling it an 'Easy Demon'.
- Bigthunder556 is the first player to beat Bloodbath on Mobile on 27 July 2019.[28] ChubsDubs, Surpl3x and Coopersuper8 all followed on 30 January 2021.
- Bigthunder556's Bloodbath completion made his Geometry Dash career go further and advance into harder Extreme Demon levels on the Demonlist.
- ChubsDubs, Surpl3x and Coopersuper are also notable for beating Bloodbath on 60hz mobile devices.
- It is known as Bloodbath Mobile Day and, according to Surpl3x, started between 30 and 31 January.

Trivia[]
General[]
- Bloodbath cannot be copied.
- Even though this level is 1 minute and 52 seconds long, in 1.9, it is XL when the duration is measured with the grid length of the level. It is now fixed, and the server now mention it is Long.
- The level was ranked #4 in GDToday's 100 Greatest Levels of All Time list.
- There is a level called AfterCataBath, initially created by Zimnyte (formerly Zimnior12), combining Cataclysm, Bloodbath and aftermath into a single level. A buffed remake of AfterCataBath, titled Apocalyptic Trilogy, referring to its trilogy name, is a super-buffed and redecorated version.
- Riot originally stated that he would re-beat this level for his 400th Demon. However, this idea was later dismissed as he completed Spacelocked instead.[31]
- Currently, Bloodbath, Quantum Processing and Red World Rebirth are Riot's only featured and rated levels.
- There is an Easter egg at the end of Bloodbath at Ggb0y's part, where the player can position themselves to land on top of the 'GG' in Riot's part. If they manage to do this, the word 'Michigun' will appear.
- Sunix uploaded a buffed version of Bloodbath named Deambath. It includes a few extra spikes, and the ball parts in ASonicMen's and Vermillion's parts feature different gameplay. It was streamed, and the video was uploaded onto his YouTube channel.
- Deam was Sunix's old username.
- Similarly, he verified and uploaded 'Invisibath', which is Bloodbath, except that everything is at 10% opacity.
- Bloodbath has spawned many remakes. For some reason, nearly all of them still have the creators' names.
- Primarily, all the remakes are nerfed, except for Deambath and Bloodlust, which are buffed. Invisibath retains the original difficulty, however.
- All his other remakes are unnerfed. These include Bloodbath in different shades of colour and an unnerfed 'Sh**ty' Bloodbath. He also planned to host a mega-collaboration for an actual unnerfed Bloodbath remake.
- In early November 2016, this level was hacked by a player named 'xxot1xx', a.k.a. 'Anaban'. He placed a start position at the end (~80%), with text explaining that he was leaving Geometry Dash. Because it was a start-position, beating it did not give the player stars.[32] Luckily, this has been fixed.
- Riot has worked on a heavily buffed version of Bloodbath called Buffbath. Many of the ship gaps are notably much tighter than before. He originally intended for this to be an update to Bloodbath, but after receiving criticism, he decided to make Buffbath a separate level that contained a secret way. The level is called 'blood bathtub hard v' and is on Riot's account under the ID 31288058.[33]
- Bloodbath was made the Weekly Demon on 1 April 2019. It was done as an April Fools' joke.
- Riot re-beat and updated Bloodbath in 2.11 to fix a 240Hz bug at 34% that would cause the player to crash into a spike when they hit the pink pads.
- It is possible to crash into the invisible blocks at 87%, npesta being the most notable player to die there.
- It is the most downloaded and liked Extreme Demon, with over 70 million downloads and 3.5 million likes.
- It is the sixth-most downloaded and 8th-most liked level overall.
- It is the most downloaded and most liked level that is not in a Map Pack or Gauntlet.
- It is the sixth-most downloaded and 8th-most liked level overall.
- Famous and viral streamer IShowSpeed has beaten an auto version of Bloodbath.
- Many of IShowSpeed's fans think Speed found a 'glitch' in the level, so they later made a video clip of Speed 'finding a glitch' to beat Bloodbath, roleplaying that Bloodbath's glitch was discovered although it was proven a myth.
- In the level The Devourer, if the player misses a pink orb at 7%, it brings them to weoweoteo's part in Bloodbath.
- When Riot passes through the first dual part in the verification video, his saying 'swag' can be heard when entering Evasium's part. Many have misheard it as 'quack', and over time, it has become a common tradition to say 'quack' during that segment while playing the level.
- A remake of Bloodbath was built by CairoX that includes an unofficial extension. The level is called Legacy.
- The song used for this level was temporarily removed because Dimrain47's Newgrounds account got hacked. Because of this, songs, including At The Speed of Light, Duality and The Disturbance, got removed from Newgrounds. Although downloading this song is no longer possible in Geometry Dash, it will still work and play if one were to have downloaded it prior. The song was restored on Newgrounds between 23 and 24 October 2021.
- The name of the achievement for clearing 300 Demon levels in Normal Mode, 'What a bloodbath', is a direct reference to this level.
Demonlist[]
- The level was initially placed at #3 on the Demonlist on 4 January 2017, above Infernal Abyss and below Sakupen Hell.
- It is currently #76 on the High Refresh Rate Mobile Demonlist, above The Hell Zone and below Low Death, and #23 on the Low Refresh Rate Mobile Demonlist, above Celestial Force and below Auditory Breaker.
- The level took Riot over 25,000 attempts to verify. Michigun and RobTop himself encouraged Riot to keep trying.
- People argued for a while that Sakupen Hell was harder than Bloodbath. Most people believe that Sakupen Hell is harder due to its difficult timings. However, some believe Bloodbath is harder due to being more than twice the length of Sakupen Hell and its consistency in difficulty. Sea said in his Sakupen Hell documentary that Sakupen Hell is harder because of the gameplay's 'sheer nature'. Sakupen Hell was later moved above Bloodbath on the Demonlist.
- Some players were revealed to have beaten the level illegitimately.
- ThePrimeEvil had claimed to beat the level but was later exposed for using hacks.
- TheRealSneaky claimed to beat the level on 75Hz but later admitted to hacking it.
- TacoMacho hacked Bloodbath four times but was exposed by nikrodox for accidentally streaming and speed-hacking.
- Aurorus hacked the level, but it was considered legitimate for a long time. Eventually, some allegations suggest all his records were hacked, and he is listed among the hackers of the community.
- On 2 July 2020, Bloodbath lost its position of being the level that remained the longest in the Top 50 on the Demonlist (having remained for 1,315 days) to Sonic Wave.
- Bloodbath was once the level that took the longest time to have any victors, taking seven months before Quasar became its first victor. It was surpassed by Avernus on 6 January 2024, which took eight months to be beaten by its first victor.
- Bloodbath is the 18th former Top 1 in the game's history.
- The placement of Alpha Baa X on 29 January 2021 pushed Bloodbath into the Legacy List of the Demonlist.[34]
- Bloodbath is one of the levels to stand the longest on the list before getting pushed into the Legacy List, sitting at 1,997 days.
- It has now been beaten by Artificial Ascent's 2,078-day record for the longest-standing level before being pushed into the Legacy List on 13 September 2022 after the placement of untitled unmastered.
- This makes the final level in the classic 'Apocalyptic Trilogy' (or the Hell Trilogy) to be pushed into the Legacy List.
- This makes Bloodbath the last level released on 1.9 to be pushed into the Legacy List.
- When Bloodbath fell off the list, the Demonlist website and the Geometry Dash servers coincidentally crashed.
- The placements of Sonic Wave, Erebus, kowareta and Plasma Pulse Finale on 3 December 2021 pushed Bloodbath out of the Top 10 on the Low Refresh Rate Mobile Demonlist.
- Bloodbath is one of the levels to stand the longest on the list before getting pushed into the Legacy List, sitting at 1,997 days.
