Not to be confused with knoeppel.

knobbelboy is a popular and skilled Dutch player and level creator in Geometry Dash. He is well-known for beating Extreme Demons such as Athanatos and Bloodbath and as being the sole verifier of Bloodlust,[2] SINGULARITY[3] and Artificial Ideology.[4] He is also a well-accomplished creator, being the creator of God Eater/Astral Divinity and The Furious as well as being part of several mega-collaborations such as Subterranean Animism[5] and Fusion Z.[6] Since 2021, he has remained mostly inactive in the community.

History[]

Early career[]

knobbelboy started his Geometry Dash career as a creator instead of a skilled player. He first joined YouTube on 29 October 2013 but did not upload any videos until 23 December 2014, when he uploaded a video of his first official Geometry Dash level, Dark Rainbow.[7] Even though the decoration was perceived to be a bit messy and the gameplay to not be that special overall, knobbelboy's creating skills improved later on. He later beat some random levels and created another level, Knock Knock.[8]

However, knobbelboy was not very well known in Update 1.9 and continued to beat random levels and create levels that gained some attention but not enough to be rated. Over the next few months, knobbelboy got better at the game and was good enough to beat most Easy Demons, such as Speed Racer[9] and Buck Force.[10] However, in April 2015, he officially quit Geometry Dash briefly due to YouTube not working out well for him from bad internet. However, his quit did not last for long, as nine days later, knobbelboy returned to beat random levels again and continued his creating career.[11]

On 12 April 2015, knobbelboy created his third level, NeverEnding, which he considered his best at the time.[12] Two days later, he created another level, Rainbow Aura. It was a 1.9 level similar to Dark Rainbow that used the song Fire Aura from The Impossible Game franchise. Shortly afterwards, knobbelboy reached 150 subscribers.[13]

For the next month or so, knobbelboy beat random levels and uploaded them until 24 May 2015, when he created his first Nine Circles level, Bullseye. He became friends with Geomania and reached 200 subscribers at that time as well.[14]

Growing in popularity[]

On 18 June 2015, knobbelboy beat his first major Demon, Nine Circles.[15] Two weeks later, on 2 July, he beat Windy Landscape, showing his skills as a player.[16] knobbelboy continued to create and beat random levels as he was working on building a new level at that time, Crystal Field.[17] On 22 July, he released a preview of the level, and eight days later, he finished it. It contained 34,000 objects in total. It also became his first rated level, rated Harder 7 Stars and featured. Even though he was not as well known as the other creators during 1.9, this was still a noteworthy achievement.

On 30 August 2015, knobbelboy reached 1,000 subscribers and created Crying Souls, the first Nine Circles level to feature moving objects. Two weeks after its release, knobbelboy reached 1,000 subscribers, around the same time as the release of Update 2.0. Crying Souls also became knobbelboy's first level rated Demon.[18]

On 4 December 2015, knobbelboy completed Supersonic, a difficult and popular 1.9 mega-collaboration level.[19] Even though this took him 17,000 attempts to complete, more than nearly any other notable player at that time, this was still a worthwhile achievement as, one month later, knobbelboy beat Fairydust in just over 4,000 attempts, showing that he was growing as a skilled player.[20]

On 22 February 2016, knobbelboy completed Theory of XoanoN, an Insane Demon. It was quite challenging and took knobbelboy over 5,000 attempts to complete.[21]

On 25 February 2016, knobbelboy released a remake of Dark Rainbow containing over 80,000 objects verified by Rlol. It showed knobbelboy's ability to create levels with high-detail effects and many objects. It was also the first rated level to have over 80,000 objects.[22]

On 22 April 2016, knobbelboy released a preview of a level, The Furious, featuring the song 'DuoCore - The Furious.' It seemed to be of Demon-difficulty from the preview and featured some fast-paced gameplay and object-heavy designs. Twelve days later, on 6 May 2016, knobbelboy officially released The Furious and verified it himself after about 1,500 attempts. It received positive feedback and was also the first time knobbelboy verified a Demon level.[23]

Evolving as a skilled player[]

knobbelboy continued to grow as a player, as on 27 May 2016, he beat his first Extreme Demon, The Hell Factory. This achievement took him over 24,000 attempts and became his official 100th Demon.[24] Three months later, on 14 June 2016, knobbelboy completed another Extreme Demon, Old Cataclysm.[25] He then beat New Cataclysm eight days later on 22 June 2016. However, knobbelboy noted that he beat the New Cataclysm a few days before he beat the old version but did not record.[26]

On 29 June 2016, knobbelboy entered Viprin's CC7 Contest for a part in Yatagarasu.[27] He did not win (as AbstractDark won instead).[28] However, on 16 July 2016, knobbelboy completed Bloodbath, at that time, the hardest Demon.[29] This achievement had taken knobbelboy over 30,000 attempts and, after this, knobbelboy became recognised as one of the best players in Geometry Dash.

For the rest of 2016, knobbelboy did not beat many more Extreme Demons and primarily worked on upcoming building- and verification projects. One of the most anticipated projects was Bloodlust, a remake of Bloodbath. Due to the overwhelming request, knobbelboy released his first progress video, 65-92%. Even though this was not much, this showed that knobbelboy was practicing occasionally.[30] Another project knobbelboy was participating in was Fusion Z, another mega-collaboration hosted by Manix648. knobbelboy showcased his part on 11 October 2016.[6]

On 6 November 2016, knobbelboy made progress on another Extreme Demon, Athanatos. He achieved a record of 58%, a small yet quick progress.[31] One month later, on 17 December 2016, just before the release of Update 2.1, knobbelboy showcased his part for Subterranean Animism, a mega-collaboration hosted by EricVanWilderman.[5]

On 3 January 2017, knobbelboy verified a highly anticipated Extreme Demon by Team N2, Artificial Ideology. It had taken him about 14,000 attempts to verify, and knobbelboy continued to get more popular thanks to his achievements and creating skills.[4]

Almost two months later, on 2 March 2017, knobbelboy started practising Bloodlust actively on stream, getting a record of 68% and making it to the extension.[32] However, the next day, knobbelboy got 'sidetracked' again, releasing his first preview of God Eater, a very object-heavy level estimated to have over 400,000 objects.[33] Even though this video did not receive much popularity, the second preview blew up around the community, earning God Eater the unofficial title of the 'Best Geometry Dash Level', receiving 100,000 views within a month and eventually reaching over 500,000 views.[34]

A month later, on 25 April 2017, knobbelboy made massive progress on Bloodlust and started actively practising it again, getting a run of 18-85%.[35] A week and a half later, on 6 June 2016, knobbelboy made another massive breakthrough on Bloodlust, 76%.[36] However, three days later, on 9 June 2016, knobbelboy achieved one of the worst fails in Geometry Dash history at the time, Bloodlust 98%.[37] This fail demotivated him to keep playing the level, causing him to take a break for quite a while. There was no activity from him until a month and a half later.

Starting new projects[]

On 28 July 2017, knobbelboy released a preview of an upcoming XL level called Project NepNep set to be an Insane/Extreme Demon. Even though there are no signs of any further progress, knobbelboy has not confirmed the mega-collaboration to be dead yet.[38] However, after the preview of the project, knobbelboy became inactive again for three months but returned to help Riot, Combined and ToshDeluxe gather evidence about NoctaFly's (now known as Noctalium) hacking scandal. Eventually, Noctalium came clean, and Riot uploaded a video of his confession, while big players like Sunix and ToshDeluxe spread the news, along with knobbelboy.[39]

During the last few months of 2017, knobbelboy primarily uploaded previews/progress videos of his upcoming projects, following his claim of the ownership of Fusion Z. He even released a Speedbuild video of a pixel Devourer of Gods in Geometry Dash based on the Calamity Mod in Terraria.[40] He had also released a preview of an Extreme Demon collaboration called Ragnarok,[41] a Creator Contest for Fusion Z[42] and the third preview of God Eater (which had to be rushed out due to another leak and DollarC).[43]

On 29 December 2017, knobbelboy returned from Winter Break and continued to work on God Eater. He uploaded the third preview of the level, revealing the full gameplay and layout with more decoration.[43] Three days later, at the beginning of 2018, knobbelboy also revealed the Fusion Z Creator Contest results.[44] Two weeks later, on 20 January 2018, knobbelboy uploaded his second Speedbuild video for God Eater, showcasing an art model of the two Great Titans Bionis and Mechonis from the Xenoblade franchise.[45]

As of 23 January 2018, knobbelboy continued to primarily work on building projects and made a layout for RedHuseey before his upcoming first level, Chaos Wing.[46] knobbelboy then released a layout preview of another upcoming level called CounterAttack, which he noted will be his main project after God Eater.[47]

As of 1 September 2019, knobbelboy showcased his updated version of Fusion Z, Molten Gear. It consists of many popular creators: Pennutoh, Metalface221, Eclipse, etc. It is a redecorated version of Fusion Z since the original Fusion Z was deemed to have outdated 2.0 decoration. It also features many gameplay changes. The boss-fight has been recreated completely by Xender Game with ~200,000 objects on the boss itself.

The aftermath of Bloodlust[]

A month after releasing his video of CounterAttack, knobbelboy finally verified Bloodlust. After 1,000 hours of playtime and over 121,000 attempts, this will likely remain as knobbelboy's greatest achievement, if not one of his greatest.[2] After this achievement, knobbelboy got more and more fans, drawing closer to 100,000 subscribers. However, the Bloodlust situation had gotten slightly out of hand, as several pro players like Skullo and EndLevel started leading a calling to lower Bloodlust below Plasma Pulse Finale on the Demonlist, quickly splitting into two hostile groups who constantly attacked and bullied each other for about two weeks.[48]

A few days after the verification of Bloodlust, on 26 February 2018, knobbelboy released a full preview of SINGULARITY, an upcoming purple-themed Extreme Demon collaboration level.[49] After verifying Bloodlust, knobbelboy became motivated to continue playing Geometry Dash and work on projects.

On 30 March 2018, knobbelboy released a progress video of Photovoltaic II, an upcoming sequel to the original Photovoltaic, a 2.0 mega-collaboration level. His first progress video was a record of 55%.[50] Later, he released a full preview on 4 April.[51]

On 8 April, knobbelboy made some progress on SINGULARITY, getting a record of 34% and a massive run of 46-100%. It was clear that knobbelboy would verify this challenging level soon.[52] A week later, on 14 April 2018, knobbelboy released the final preview of God Eater. In the video description, he said the level would be finished in a few months.[53]

On 23 April 2018, knobbelboy released a full preview of Orochi, a nearly impossible three-minute-long Extreme Demon. In the video description, he noted that he is now the official owner of the level and would try to verify it after finishing most of his main projects.[54] The next day, on 24 April 2018, knobbelboy achieved a breathtaking record of 81% on SINGULARITY, achieved through ~10,000 attempts.[55]

On 3 May 2018, knobbelboy reached 100,000 subscribers, making him the second Dutch player to accomplish this (the first being ToshDeluxe). On top of that, he did a face reveal as a 100,000 subscriber special, which he promised a while ago.[56]

On 29 May 2018, knobbelboy uploaded a layout of Cataclysm II, a fan-made sequel to Cataclysm with similar gameplay but extreme buffs. It was soon officially confirmed as a new level, but it received some hatred for resembling a 'generic' level.[57]

On 31 May 2018, knobbelboy announced that he and six other well-known creators would do a level request stream on Twitch on the same day to celebrate the 'mod wave' on 21 May 2017, when knobbelboy himself and 14 other players became moderators.[58] Three days later, on 3 June 2018, knobbelboy released the second preview of Ragnarok, showing that the project was not dead or cancelled.[59]

On 8 June 2018, knobbelboy released a layout of his part in Night Rider, a highly anticipated mega-collaboration hosted by LmAnubis.[60]

On 20 June 2018, knobbelboy released a preview of the fully decorated God Eater, a project he worked on for 400-500 hours. It had 300,000 objects, 550 groups and 550 colour channels.[61] He started verifying it but kept crashing at 9% due to a bug and thus had to quit and make the level temporarily die.

A week later, he released an updated layout for Project NepNep, fixing many problems with the level.[62] He said he lost his copy of the layout and had to start a new one and permitted Chara (Segami on YouTube) to verify.

On 4 July 2018, knobbelboy got 96% on SINGULARITY, however not raging as he did to the 98% death on Bloodlust and deciding to finish it sooner.[63] On 25 July 2018, knobbelboy uploaded a new video showcasing part of the layout of a new Fusion Z remake he did by using the Creator Contest winners and his gameplay.[64] Then, on 11 August 2018, knobbelboy finally verified SINGULARITY a month after he got 96%, unlike the half-year it took him to verify Bloodlust since the 98% death.[3]

From 12 September 2018, knobbelboy began streaming progress on God Eater, getting 35% as his first notable progress.[65] However, he did not make much progress for a month, saying the level was much harder than he expected. He was also struggling with a kidney stone during that time. knobbelboy showcased another highly anticipated project, Edge of the Blade, an upcoming Extreme Demon mega-collaboration co-hosted by Sean and knobbelboy himself.[66] Three days later, he achieved more progress on God Eater with a record of 51%.[67] One month later, he achieved another breakthrough of 76%, claiming he should be able to verify the level by December.[68]

On 24 November 2018, knobbelboy announced his official Discord Server, where knobbelboy's fans could chat around along with him and RedHuseey.[69] (However, this server existed before this video. knobbelboy just made another announcement video.)

The aftermath of God Eater[]

On 6 January 2019, knobbelboy verified God Eater after two years in the works.[70] About three weeks later, he released the third and what appears to be the final preview of Ragnarok, showcasing the completed gameplay and decoration. In the video description, he revealed that it took three years to build, and it was aiming to be harder than Yatagarasu. He also stated that Zephal was set to verify it, with Technical as the backup verifier.[71]

On 2 March 2019, knobbelboy began streaming progress on Ouroboros and got a record of 29%.[72] Exactly one week later, on 9 March, he achieved an incredible 49%. In the video description, he predicted it would be harder than Plasma Pulse Finale in its current state.[73] After a long absence on 24 March, he achieved runs of 65-100% and 52-93%. In the video description, he stated that he did not think it was harder than Plasma Pulse Finale but believed it was at least as hard as Yatagarasu.[74] After a long period of inactivity on 4 May, knobbelboy achieved 67% on Ouroboros.[75]

On 26 June 2019, God Eater vanished from the Geometry Dash servers, and all traces of the level in videos were gone from knobbelboy's YouTube channel. At 3:30 PM on the same day, RedHuseey announced knobbelboy's official Discord server.

In the announcement, Huseey stated that the reason for the removal of all official God Eater content was real-world conflicts, which were above what the community had ever seen before. He also said to leave knobbelboy alone, as it was 'no one but Knob's business,' and that everyone should move on. The very next day, on 27 June 2019, Zhander tweeted about the situation regarding rumours of the level's takedown.

On 5 September 2019, knobbelboy uploaded a video discussing why God Eater was deleted. The reason was the end art and the title used were copyrighted.[76] He received a desist from the God Eater game developers, via email. In an interview with Huseey, the email sent by the God Eater game developers was one of the scariest things he has ever experienced. However, he also announced that the level is not dead and that he only needs to remove the end art and change the title, and the level will be legal.

On 18 October, knobbelboy achieved 41% on Molten Gear, which was just finished.[77]

On 23 December, before Christmas of 2019, knobbelboy completed Astral Divinity, the name for God Eater, bringing the level back onto the servers.

knobbelboy's latest completion is of Yatagarasu, with its video published on 21 September 2020.[78] Afterwards, there was no activity on his YouTube channel for over two years, until 14 May 2023, when he uploaded the third preview of Orochi.[79]

Conflicts[]

  • God Eater Videos - Around April/May 2017, knobbelboy released his second preview of God Eater. It quickly attracted 200,000 views but also prompted large footage-stealing controversy, causing tensions between Sea and Nexus as a result.[80]
  • NoctaFly Hacking Drama - When NoctaFly, now known as Noctalium, was exposed for hacking several of his major achievements, knobbelboy got involved with Riot and several other notable players to team up gathering evidence for his hacking.
  • Fusion Z Drama - When Manix648 quit Geometry Dash, he took Fusion Z with him and cancelled the level.[81] However, knobbelboy went against his wishes to let the level die by claiming its ownership and giving it to Geomania to verify instead. All parties were criticized, and in the end, Manix648 and knobbelboy agreed; many players' parts would be deleted, and ones made by unknown players would replace them.
  • God Eater Leak - God Eater was leaked into another server hacking, spoiling 7 months of progress. DollarC asked knobbelboy not to upload a full run of this level, but knobbelboy refused by uploading it anyway.
  • EndLevel vs. knobbelboy Drama: After knobblelboy crashed at 98% on Bloodlust, making one of the worst fails ever in GD History, however EndLevel in the other hand, attempted to verify Renevant, the harder sequel to Allegiance, which is harder than Bloodlust because he said that Bloodlust is overrated as a hot take. EndLevel achieved a 27% run on Renevant, however, if he verified it, it will steal knobbelboy's fame, and so does Bloodlust. So EndLevel dropped the level before knobbelboy verifies Bloodlust, and passed onto Aquiver instead.
  • Crazen vs. knobbelboy Drama - Crazen took a copy of Bloodlust for himself in early February 2018 while knobbelboy was verifying it. He claimed that knobbelboy was taking too long and that he was giving knobbelboy a taste of his own medicine (referring to when knobbelboy stole Fusion Z). knobbelboy and his fans lashed back at him as Crazen made progress on the level. Eventually, Crazen apologized and dropped Bloodlust. knobbelboy then went back onto the level and verified it.
