The original and first Circles level, Nine Circles by Zobros.
Nine Circles levels are remake levels based on Zobros' 1.9 Demon level Nine Circles, usually with varying color, decoration, and difficulty, and one of the most popular level trends to date. Nine Circles levels generally use dubstep, electro, or dance music, especially by the composer of the Nine Circles song NIGHTKilla (Rukkus), Xtrullor, and more. The signature strobing wave part, termed the "Circles effect", typically begins at the drop of the song. These sections have a noticeable jump in difficulty, with a flashing background and obstacles making it difficult to see where the player is going. Occasionally the effect is present with non-wave game-modes, such as in The Realistic or Bausha Vortex. A number of Nine Circles levels have formerly been considered the hardest levels in Geometry Dash, including Sonic Wave (and its remakes), Arctic Lights, and Sakupen Circles.
History[]
In early 2015, Zobros published the Hard Demon level Nine Circles, his first original level. This level left the Geometry Dash community stunned and became very popular. In late February, the then-unknown player SuperPizzaLuigi (Now known as MkComic) released a remake of this level, with purple colors and another NIGHTkilla song of the same name: Fairydust. In late April, Softable and well-known creator ZenthicAlpha replicated Nine Circles respectively with The Realistic and Jawbreaker. Since this moment, the trend of Nine Circles levels spread like wildfire. Dozens of this kind of level in the months from May to August, made by famous creators (Glittershroom, Dhafin, Andromeda, and Minesap) and from unknown creators who became famous just by creating a remake of Nine Circles (CrisPy Dash, Artimiel, RedUniverse, N1XO) were made. This trend declined with the 2.0 update since RobTop refused to give stars to other classical remakes of Nine Circles, except in very few cases. Then the creators experimented with new styles, and the 2.0 generation of Nine Circles levels was born with levels like Retro Circles, Circulatum, AnotherCircles, and Ultimate Circles. Some people like Rulas and Rustam launched other trending styles like Ultra and XII Circles, which are even harder to replicate, especially the latter. In 2016, very few remakes got featured, and by this point, since even Zobros found the trend overused, RobTop promised him any new Nine Circles levels would likely not get rated. This then sparked the trend of 2.1 style Nine Circles Levels, some examples including pulsar, Nine CircleX, Zacarias, Tenth Circle, and Cosmic Cyclone.
Nine Circles Criteria[]
The following information is a general classification for star-rated levels given the "Nine Circles" designation, characterized by patterns that have appeared across all variations of past levels generally accepted as Nine Circles levels. These criteria aim to differentiate Nine Circles levels from non-Nine Circles levels (some of which are just "Nine Circles-themed") using analytical and statistical data for consistent and logical classification. The document outlines key elements that constitute the playability and characterization of a Nine Circles level. Only star rate levels are recognized as that is how Robtop deems a level quality and "worth recognizing".
Level Structure[]
- The wave gamemode must be active for GREATER THAN 25% of a star-rated level for it to be considered a Nine Circles level
- Wave is a prominent part of Nine Circles levels. Please refer to the below document outlining data on how much wave, by percent, appears in each currently rated Nine Circles level: Nine Circles Wave Quantity Data. The average amount of wave percent in a Nine Circles level is 50.5%. The rule only demands a threshold of greater than 25% to allow for liberty in creation. 25% was determined based on the theory that, psychologically, humans recognize something as having prominence when it is within the Top 3 of a larger category. This study is evident in how we often rank things and recognize achievements (i.e., the podium in the Olympics). So to ensure wave is AT LEAST always within the Top 3 most prominent game modes used in a Nine Circles level, it must appear for greater than 25% of the level.
The level must not begin with the wave gamemode[]
- The buildup to the wave section, usually accompanied by a buildup to a drop in the music, always consists of non-wave gameplay. Analysis of every currently rated Nine Circles Demon shows that none of these levels have ever begun with a wave.
Decoration[]
- Diamond Block structuring must account for AT LEAST 50% of the decoration style while the wave gamemode is active
- Every single current-rated Nine Circles Demon features diamond blocks to create the actual corridors the wave passes through (i.e., the actual gameplay). The blocks appear in the level as diamonds in the center or large triangles on the top or bottom. The whole block is pitched at either a 45-degree or 60-degree angle to match the wave or mini-wave respectively. This structure differs from the type of structuring in wave parts in levels such as ZAPHKIEL, where the lines forming the wave corridors are pitched at the angles of the wave, but the larger block piece is not. The structuring is appropriate if the lines denoting the wave corridors extend all the way to the edges of the block or the floor/ceiling of the level. Every single current rated Nine Circles level has been verified to include this structuring. Diamond block structuring can be understood even better by referring to the many different types of structuring used in wave sections that ARE NOT diamond block structuring. Refer to these examples:
- Spike and Pillar structuring: Use of spike objects and vertical pillars to create wave gameplay
- Examples: The Golden (28%-35%), Hatred (23%-34%)
- Slanted Pillar Structuring: Use of slanted pillars to create wave gameplay:
- Examples: Cold Sweat (61%-87%), Cataclysm (6%-15%, 75%-84%)
- Rectangular Block Structuring: Rectangular blocks are mainly used to structure the wave. The wave corridors themselves may have used slanted lines, but the surrounding objects are rectangular blocks.
- Examples: All wave sections in ZAPHKIEL, Slaughterhouse (63%-67%)
- Spike and Pillar structuring: Use of spike objects and vertical pillars to create wave gameplay
- The Concentric Flashing effect appears on the surrounding structuring for AT LEAST 50% of the time that the wave gamemode is active
Figures 1-3 will be used to explain what concentric flashing is. Figure 1 shows an example of concentric circles. Concentric is defined as: “of or denoting circles, arcs, or other shapes which share the same center, the larger often completely surrounding the smaller.” Figure 1 shows five circles all with the same center but different sizes. In this formation, bars of space are created between the circles.

Each bar in Figure 3 is numbered 1-4. Concentric flashing occurs when these bar flash in an ordered, repetitive fashion. Each bar (Numbered 1-4) can either be ON or OFF. Every bar starts in the OFF position. Bar 1 flashes into the ON position. Bar 1 then flashes to the OFF position, and at the SAME TIME, bar 2 flashes into the ON position. NEXT, Bar 2 then flashes to the OFF position, and at the SAME TIME, bar 3 flashes into the ON position. NEXT, Bar 3 then flashes to the OFF position, and at the SAME TIME, bar 4 flashes into the ON position. FINALLY, bar 4 flashes OFF, and bar 1 then flashes back ON, and the cycle repeats itself.

The flashing can occur in the opposite direction, with bar 4 flashing first and bar 1 last. The flashing on the object must have a repetitive IN to OUT or OUT to IN direction, with OUT being the outer edge of the block and IN being the center of the block. Each current rated Nine Circles level features this effect.

Nine Circles "Extras"[]
According to the Nine Circles Demon List, which strictly follows the criteria as described in detail on the fandom list, Nine Circles "Extras" are a replacement for the old "exceptions" section on the wiki. This list is made to accommodate levels that are considered circles by many people but are not recognized by the list. To honor them, we will list them here under a similar set of criteria as listed below:
- It follows 3 of the 4 criteria for a normal Nine Circles level.
- Has been called Nine Circles by reliable community figures. (This rule overrides the first one if necessary.)
- Has legacy in the Nine Circles series.
For a player attempting to beat every Nine Circles Demon, these demons are recommended, but not required.

Complete Victors[]
- Many believe that Riot didn't complete the Nine Circles series back in 1.9 claiming he missed Headrush, but evidence has recently come to the table recently on Headrush's verification video that it may have been rated after he beat Crimson Clutter, therefore making him the first. Comments on Headrush's verification in 2015 said things like "finally rated" and while we don't know the exact date the comment was posted, we can check if the years changes from 7 to 8 years or 8 to 9 years after the day Riot beat Crimson Clutter, August 15th, 2015. Should the years change after this date and the comments are true, it would mean Riot was officially the first player to beat all the rated Nine Circles levels. - On August 2, 2017, JakeEP became the first-ever to complete the Nine Circles series.
- Kevelia became the second victor on September 18, 2017, after beating Circles Evolution (considered a Nine Circles level at the time).
- iNeo became the third victor on February 3, 2019, after beating Power, though many of their completions were not recorded, thus lacking prominent evidence.

- Two players have, at one point, completed every rated Nine Circles Demon.
- JakeEP - when there were 57 Nine Circles Demons.
- Kevelia - when there were 58 Nine Circles Demons.
- Technically, Zobros completed every Nine Circles Demon when there was only one. However, this did not count as it was not a trend yet.
- It was initially known that JakeEP became the first player to complete 100 rated Nine Circles Demons, as of December 7, 2022. However, it was recently discovered that Jake's completion of Planet Circles was not the rated version on the servers, so the title goes to the next person to reach it, wity.
- There is a chronological list of Nine Circles levels made by NothingIsScary.
- Before 2.0, triple saw-blades had an outline in the third saw-blade, making it look like it had four saw-blades. (If the OBJ had 1.00 opacity.)
- It is still possible to make these saw-blades after 2.0 via color blending.
- Out of all the Nine Circles Demons, twelve have an Epic rating: pulsar, Nine CircleX, Nine Paws, Tenth Circle, Sonic Wave Rebirth, ACCELERATOR, FIREPOWER, Solar Flare, Haywire, Psychedelic Circles, Nomostros Cosmos, and Ring Trick; the hardest one out of all of them being Solar Flare and the easiest being ACCELERATOR.
- The current hardest-rated Nine Circles level according to the Demonlist is Sakupen Circles.
- Sonic Wave and Sakupen Circles are the only Former Top 1 that are a Nine Circles level.
- Arctic Lights was unintentionally placed as a Top 1 on the Demonlist on May 27, 2022, for less than an hour.
- A total of six Nine Circles levels have been a Daily Level:
- Nine Circles, made Daily as a joke by RobTop on April 1, 2020 - the only Demon to have ever been a Daily Level (#1,215).
